According to Beating Analytics, more than 50 Grok model researchers have left SpaceX AI (formerly xAI) through layoffs, terminations, or voluntary departures since the company’s February acquisition by SpaceX. The pre-training team has shrunk from over 200 to just a handful of people.
The departing talent is being rapidly absorbed by competitors. Meta has hired at least 11 former employees, Thinking Machines (led by Mira Murati) at least 7, and SpaceX AI has also leased its data center capacity to Anthropic.
