U.S. Commerce Department Restricts Anthropic From Sharing Fable AI Model With Foreign Workers

According to The Information, the U.S. Commerce Department on June 12 warned AI company Anthropic that sharing access to its latest models "Fable" and "Mythos" with foreign nationals—including the company's own international employees—would require prior government approval. Anthropic held talks with Trump administration officials on June 15 to explore options for reinstating access.

The restriction leverages export control rules and reflects growing government scrutiny of foreign talent's access to advanced AI systems. Research data shows that 38% of authors at top global AI academic conferences were educated in China, and nearly three-quarters now work at U.S. AI firms including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta.
