According to CNN on May 17, U.S. officials suspect Iranian hackers are behind a series of cyberattacks on fuel tank monitoring systems operated by gas stations across multiple states. The attackers exploited security vulnerabilities in automated tank gauge (ATG) systems, which are connected to the internet without password protection, gaining access to alter displayed fuel data in some cases. However, the actual fuel reserves in tanks were not changed. U.S. officials and private security experts warned that while no physical damage or injuries have been reported, attackers could theoretically prevent fuel leaks from being detected in a timely manner.
