Gate News message, April 16 — Blockstream CEO Adam Back expressed support for an optional approach to Bitcoin’s quantum resistance upgrade at Paris Blockchain Week, opposing the BIP-361 proposal that would force-freeze quantum-vulnerable addresses. Back emphasized that “preparing in advance is far safer than scrambling during a crisis” and highlighted the Bitcoin community’s ability to coordinate rapid responses to critical vulnerabilities.
The BIP-361 proposal, put forward by developer Jameson Lopp and five others and titled “Post-Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset,” advocates for the gradual elimination of quantum-vulnerable addresses over five years, ultimately freezing unmigrated coins—including approximately 1.7 million BTC held by Satoshi Nakamoto.
