According to Bloomberg, Anthropic closed access to its Mythos and Fable models on June 15 after the Trump administration demanded restrictions on foreign users. Zhipu AI, a Beijing-based company, immediately announced the release of its most advanced model with open-source capabilities, positioning itself as an alternative to restricted U.S. offerings.
Zhipu AI co-founder Tang Jie posted on X that the sudden restrictions "due to non-technical reasons" underscored the importance of open science. The company's stock, listed in Hong Kong under Knowledge Atlas Technology JSC (02513-HK), surged on Monday (June 15), as analysts noted the timing created a strategic messaging advantage for Chinese AI enterprises amid rising global concerns about U.S. technology export controls.
