Federal Judge Dismisses xAI's Trade Secret Lawsuit Against OpenAI

According to U.S. District Judge Rita Lin's court order on Monday, the federal judge dismissed xAI's trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI without leave to amend, finding the company failed to prove OpenAI improperly obtained confidential information related to its Grok chatbot. Judge Lin concluded that xAI did not sufficiently demonstrate OpenAI induced a former xAI engineer to disclose trade secrets during the recruiting process, noting that merely asking candidates about their previous work is routine in hiring and does not prove inducement. This is the second legal defeat for Elon Musk in his dispute with OpenAI, following a jury's rejection last month of his $150 billion lawsuit alleging OpenAI abandoned its nonprofit mission.
