Myanmar Scam Networks Leverage AI and Crypto Payments, Starlink Key Infrastructure: Report

According to Red Star News, an investigation into Myanmar-based fraud operations reveals that global telecom scams are increasingly adopting AI-powered automation combined with cross-border cryptocurrency payments. The criminal networks use large language models including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini to generate multilingual social engineering scripts and conduct identity spoofing and emotional manipulation at scale. Funds are transferred via on-chain payments and international channels for rapid laundering, creating an "AI-driven acquisition plus crypto settlement" dual-layer model with high automation and cross-border scalability. Starlink has become the primary internet service provider for these operations.

OpenAI responded that ChatGPT misuse by scammers resembles legitimate user behavior, making detection difficult, but noted its safety systems suspend approximately 100,000 suspicious accounts monthly. Google stated its AI models include safety guardrails and emphasized its commitment to "responsible AI development" to restrict tool misuse for fraud and other illegal purposes.
