According to CCTV, on May 15, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Janina Hennis-Plasschaert from the Netherlands as Deputy Secretary-General for Safety and Security, replacing Canada’s Gilles Michaud. Hennis-Plasschaert previously served as Dutch Defense Minister, UN Special Representative for Iraq, and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, and has held the position of UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon since 2024.
