Brazil Classifies Crypto VASPs as Type 3 Financial Institutions, Imposes Brokerage-Level Requirements from January 2027

According to the Central Bank of Brazil, on Wednesday, the bank issued Resolution No. 580/2026 classifying virtual asset service providers (VASPs) and conglomerates led by crypto companies as Type 3 institutions. Starting January 1, 2027, VASPs will be subject to the same prudential requirements as traditional securities brokerages, including risk management rules, capital requirements, and information disclosure policies.
